Mentoring Graduate Students: Aligning Expectations

Through discussion and analyses of experience, this series helps faculty develop the skills needed to provide ongoing and successful mentoring of graduate students. Based on evidence-based facilitation from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experience in Research (CIMER), mentor training includes interactive workshops that focus on communicating effectively, aligning expectations, mentoring across difference and having difficult conversations. This workshop will focus on aligning expectations and clearly communicating with the mentee; designing and communicating clear goals for the mentoring relationship; and considering how differences may affect the relationship. It will be led by staff from the Chicago Center for Teaching.

Register to watch the feature-length documentary film "Picture a Scientist", which leads viewers on a journey deep into a group of women scientists' own experiences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. You'll receive a link to the film enabling you to watch it online at any time November 13 -15. You can also attend a virtual panel discussion on November 18 from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. featuring one of the scientists from the film and several UChicago women in STEM.

Fostering Inclusive and Equitable Student Engagement

It can be challenging to ensure that students discuss, interrogate, inquire, and question effectively and equitably. This workshop will focus on inclusive engagement and provide strategies for structuring learning that is productive for all students. We will discuss a framework for inclusion and strategies that can be applied to remote and face-to-face courses. This session will be led by the Chicago Center for Teaching.
