Discourse rests at the nexus of the entangling of academic inquiry, freedom of expression, democratic practices, and civic education. The testing and refining of ideas necessary for academic inquiry depends on the ability to seek out and engage multiple perspectives as well as difference and disagreement. Through an understanding of discourse and the limits current models, workshop participants will be able to reimagine and transform class discussion. The workshop will cover principles and processes of free expression and discourse as well as provide models for fostering robust, inclusive, and productive class discussion. This is a two-part workshop offered by the Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning; attendees should also attend the November 3 session.
