Free expression and academic freedom are core principles at the University of Chicago. Faculty are strongly encouraged to engage in open discourse and address challenging topics in pursuit of new knowledge and ideas. Today’s rapidly evolving communications landscape offers many opportunities for faculty and other academic appointees to engage in public conversations on important topics. It also means that all people, including faculty, have an interest in considering how to manage online communications while anticipating potential risks.
This session will provide a high-level overview of the Guide to Managing Online Harassment that was recently created by the Office of the Provost. It will include examples of harassment individuals may encounter online, explore potential legal options, share tips and best practices for communicating online, and discuss resources for managing online situations and their limits. This session will be led by Jason Merchant, Vice Provost and the Lorna Puttkammer Straus Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Linguistics and in the College. He will be joined by Ted Stamatakos, Senior Associate General Counsel; Bridget Collier, Associate Provost for Equal Opportunity Programs; and Jeremy Manier, Assistant Vice President for Communications.
