Writing long-form pieces for general-audience magazines, books, and other formats can require different skills and approaches than most academic work. In this session, Evan Osnos, a staff writer for the New Yorker magazine and a former reporter with the Chicago Tribune, will discuss ways of developing long-form writing ideas and the kinds of background research, interviews, and subject-matter expertise that are often required. This session will touch on how to structure a good story and how to bring complicated subjects to life for non-expert readers. Osnos is the author of Wildland: The Making of America’s FuryJoe Biden: The Life, the Run, and What Matters Now; and Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China.
